BJJ Kumite Star, Sean Roberts, Teaches At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Van Nuys

January 17th, 2013

We had the absolute pleasure of having Sean Roberts, one of the stars of the BJJ Kumite, come by 10th Planet Van Nuys and teach our morning class. He showed some great details on the knee slicer pass, on the Americana, and some new details on the Samurai back-take. He rolled with all takers afterwards! If you’re not familiar with him, he’s one of the Rising stars coming in Jiu Jitsu out of Ralph Gracie’s Academy in Northern California. He’s also infamous for his submission victory over current UFC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, check it out.

10th Planet Van Nuys Jan ’13 Curriculum: Arm Drag to Rear Naked Choke (RNC)

January 8th, 2013

The arm drag is a versitile move, both on the ground and from standing. It can be used to set up finishes, or set up takedowns. Ever since learning it after Marcello Garcia crushed everybody with it, it has been a staple of my game. Below is one of my favorite ways to get the RNC.

I don’t talke too much about it in this article, but hand fighting is a huge part of getting the armdrag. Without winner the hand fight, it’ll be very difficult to be able to just grab the arm straight forward. Now days, the set up to the armdrag is just as important as the armdrag itself.

It’s hard to believe that we’re almost 50 episodes in to “Mastering the System.” Each episode is always chalk full of Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, comedy, celebrities and much more. Most importantly, Eddie shows his curriculum for that month in each episode. This gives fans and up close and personal look at exactly what moves are being taught at the 10th Planet headquarters at the Tapout gym in beautiful downtown Los Angeles. up at 10th Planet Van Nuys, all the guys can’t make it down to HQ on a reglar basis, so they can watch from the comfort of their own homes.

Below is a breakdown my minutes and seconds as to what all is in the video. If you like what you see, you can watch the full videos when you sign up for a premium account, at www.10thplanetjj.com. What Makes a Good Jiu Jitsu Training Partner part 3

November 22nd, 2012

Ok so helpfully you’ve read my two previous articles on the subject of the importance of good training partners. I you haven’t read them yet, why don’t you click here to see the first one, and click here to see the second one.

  • Now you should be all caught up with what makes a good training partner. Going back, I realized I didn’t mention the obvious things that could make you want to, or not want to, work out with another person. Let’s make a list of things that would be important.
  • Wear zippers, pockets or buttons. This can be annoying sometimes when you get scratched, but this can be fat out dangerous as well. We’ve had a student that actually needed stitches because there was a small zipper on the pant leg of his sweats. If he has to get stitches that can lead to missing class. Be mindful of what you wear to class. For this and a multitude of other reasons, I will be making a bottom half uniform in the near future.
  • Wear unwashed uniform. This stinks, and it makes people not want to roll with you. If you get a reputation for being the class stinker, it will deter people from working with you. If they do work with you, they’ll have a terrible class because the’re going to have to smell you the whole time. Not only does this suck, but it also is dangerous. You can get all kinds of diseases from unclean uniforms. Nothing would be worse then getting staph from you training partner due to the fact he was too lazy to wash his clothing.
  • Have bad body odor or bad breath. This sort of goes along with having an unwashed uniform. Go out and get some wipes from Defense Soap, click the link on the bottom of this page. You can also get some body spray and apply that sparingly to you body, it will make your experience at the gym more enjoyable, and make people show you all their secrets instead of avoiding you altogether.

I got loads more of these, tune in next time for more tips on how not to be a douche bag.

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Wins Big in CAMO MMA

September 22nd, 2012

Ben Sample of HQ and Mike “Lobes” Frausto of 10th Planet Van Nuys both DEMOLISH their opponents both under 1 min. Not quite the way you would have expected it. First, Lobes defeated his opponent with vicious knees to the body. It’s likely he broke his opponent’s arm in the process.

Ben crushed his adversary, David Lee a grappling stud and standout under Barrett Yoshida, with an Anderson Silva style beat down. Throwing lazer beams to every part of the body, it was something else to watch. He KO’d him in just 19 seconds.

Big shouts out!

Core Strengthening – Lower Back Injury Prevention with Rener Gracie

February 10th, 2011

Protect your back to prolong your jiu-jitsu career.

Even though my back has fully recovered, I continue to do this lumbar strengthening routine at least 3-4 times a week (during rehab I did it every day). Start at level 1 and once you find your balance, you can go to level 2. Once level 2 gets too easy, you can place your feet on an elevated platform (6-8 inches) for level 3. Start with 25 reps on each side, 3 sets, then increase the number of reps to 50, 75 and once you’re then 100 on each side for 3 sets.

If you live in Southern California and you’ve had reoccurring back issues, you owe it to yourself to visit the Non-Surgical Spine Care Center. Call Dr. Dave (714) 398-3535 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (714) 398-3535 end_of_the_skype_highlighting and tell him Rener sent you. He’ll take good care of you.
