RGPD: Erik Paulson Breaks The Lockdown

“The “Lockdown”, known more generically as the “Scorpion Lock” has become a very popular and effective base of operations from the Half Guard. On three separate occasions I asked Sensei Paulson how he would counter this style of half guard and this was perhaps his most thorough, set of options.

In the future, Dr. Sick will revisit Breaking the Lockdown and try to consolidate a couple of the other options shown during other sessions with Sensei Paulson.”

Ok, so for the record, Paulson is no joke. Having said that, sure these techniques he shows work well…on somebody who dabbles with the lock down. No doubt, I pull these and other moves off all the time on guys at the gym who dabble in lock-down but don’t own it. But for the guys who own the position, these defenses that Paulson is showing are very low percentage. I guarantee it will be a cold day in hell before I get caught by one of these defenses. The guys who pass my lock-down are the guys who catch an underhook before I can get one on them and move their hips high enough, quick enough, to prevent me from taking a deep overhook and working my stomps. Then I get stuck and they work a no-hand pass. That’s legit and comes down to timing. I don’t think this Paulson stuff is going to be very high percentage on someone who plays a confident lock-down game.

    Agreed on all points.

Paulson is the shit! However that being said, one of the things I stress when using the lockdown is upper body control. You cannot allow your opponent the liberty of hip/and upper body movement. Either a strong whizzer/pimp arm if they have a under/over or double underhooks if you can obtain it will eliminate all the space they have to create such movements.
I’d even go sofar to say I’ve used some of techniques Paulson’s demo’d (I learned them from my Judo coach and Gene LeBell)and they do work (however agreed they are low percentage)but only if you have the space and movement to make them work, which is very very rare against someone who has a strong 10th Planet 1/2 guard game.

The Boa, Half Plex path would shut down they counters.

Its all about the clinch and squeeze baby!

Now…for the record, I put up a video on counters to the IDL and so did Brian Yamasaki. I hope Alder features these here so we can see the counters and the points which Chris already pointed out.

If he is going to reach back for my feet, cool with me.

    100% baby!

All these counters do become much easier if you out weigh your opponent by at least 30 lbs. 50 would be better.

Needless to say Paulson would technically anialate me, but all of these would be “catch” moves. Meaning no real setup. The first ones most plausible if the opponent is tired. Very interesting though. Haven’t seen it.

  6. Erik Wahlberg says:

I’ve been drilling the lock down thanks to the great videos you guys have been posting…

Paulie would never have a chance with me. It’d be BOOM and he’s swept. Thanks for trying, though.

    😛

  7. Lazy Jits says:

It’s all about BOOM! Say it at the right time with the right intensity and BOOM! even Eddie will fall prey to your vicious half-guard sweeps!

ari post the IDL counter, i promise i’ll let the spam blocker haters let it through.

  9. carlos says:

lmao lazy jits you make me laugh. “Even eddie will fall prey to your vicious half-guard sweeps!”. I assume you have never rolled, seen, or even know anything about Eddie.

Carlos, I’m being F-A-C-E-T-I-O-U-S. Perhaps you didn’t catch Wahlberg’s reference to a previous post. That’s ok, you don’t have to be a genius to be a good guy and I’m glad I made you laugh your ass off even though you didn’t get the joke.

  11. Lazy Jits says:

    BTW, who’s Eddie?
